Xolani, a lonely factory worker, joins the men of his community in the mountains of the Eastern Cape to initiate a group of teenage boys into manhood. When a defiant initiate from the city discovers his best kept secret, Xolani’s entire existence begins to unravel.
A courageous film on a rare subject, which has sparked protests, intimidation, and vandalism. The film crew and actors have received death threats. After being pulled from theaters in South Africa, the film is now restricted to viewers 16 and older due to its language and sexual content, even though it contains no sex scenes.

The film tells the story of a gay man in New York, in a monogamous relationship, who becomes a volunteer caregiver for another gay man in the terminal stages of AIDS. A deep friendship develops between them.
Arthur J. Bressan Jr. directed this independent masterpiece in 1985, which was the first feature-length drama to address AIDS. With a lot of courage, and through the simplicity of its narrative and the elegance of its pacing, Buddies achieves a rare perfection. It is a timeless portrait of an entire era in gay history.
